SUMMARY:Dark Nights and Dark Deeds in Grantown-on-Spey
DESCRIPTION:It’s autumn so that means it’s time to return to Grantown for the Halloween weekend. \nThis is always a high spot on my calendar\, not the least because we get to do Carry on Sleuthing. \nOK\, maybe audiences don’t share our enthusiasm but the cast enjoy themselves. Well\, most of them. \nAnd this year\, it’s a BRAND NEW show\, entitled A MURDER IS MISPRONOUNCED! \nRegular cast mates Caro Ramsay\, Michael J. Malone and I will the joined by guests stars SG MacLean\, Lesley Kelly\, Olga Wojtas and James Oswald in the comedy. For want of a better word. \nShona MacLean has walked the boards before\, so she should know better. Lesley Kelly has also appeared in a previous show. Olga and James are fresh meat…sorry\, newcomers. \nThe play kicks off the festival weekend during which all the above will be joined by author Mark Leggatt for panels and chats and\, on Saturday night\, a quiz being concocted by Caro Ramsay. \nIt really is a fun weekend and if you can get to this lovely town nestling at the foot of the Cairngorms\, then we’d love to see you. \nSee the poster illustrations for details. All events will take place in the newly refurbished Grantown YMCA Community Centre on the Main Street. \njtasjtas \n

SUMMARY:Denzil and me at Aye Write 2020
DESCRIPTION:The programme for the superb Glasgow literary festival Aye Write has been announced – and I’m in it! \nYay! \nI’m paired with someone called Denzil Meyrick\, who must be a newcomer because I’ve heard very little about him and he’s not very active on social media at all. \nApparently\, his books are good though. \nAnd we’re being interviewed by another brash newcomer called Theresa Talbot\, who is apparently also good. \nTheresa Talbot \nI think they’re just giving these fresh starts a hand up by pairing them with a more seasoned hand. \nI really should be more careful when shaking that pepper pot. \n \n \nSeriously\, I’m looking forward to the event. \nDenzil is a huge draw and Theresa is brilliant interviewer and author. \nAlso\, we’re pals (they’ll deny it\, but I have emails) so it will be a laugh. \nCome along and see us if you can. \nWe’re appearing on Friday March 20 at 7.45pm in the Mitchell Library. \nYou can find details here: \nDenzil and Douglas at Aye Write

SUMMARY:Dark Nights\, Dark Deeds - and some jokes - in Grantown
DESCRIPTION:What am I doing right now\, I hear you say? \nWell\, I’ll tell you – I’m trying to think up (Skelton speak for steal) as many jokes as I can for the opening event of this year’s crime writing festival in sunny Grantown-on-Spey. \nFor the past three years we have presented a new Carry on Sleuthing on the Friday night but this year is different. \nLetitia Luvibod\, the real-life alter ego of the fictional Caro Ramsay\, has a subsequent appointment and has managed to avoid the show this year. \nFrankly\, we couldn’t do it without her. She told us. \nSo\, Michael J. Malone and I have put our heads together. It was quite painful and I don’t know why we did it. \nAnyway\, the upshot is the opener this year will be a pot pourri of comedy. And if you have some pot\, it might help. \nRather confidently called You’ll Die Laughing\, the show will feature the aforementioned Mr Malone and myself\, along with special guests. \nI’m scribbling away right now. Well\, not right now because I’m typing this\, but you know what I mean. However\, the only thing I can say with any measure of confidence is that the show will feature a Sherlock Holmes parody. \nWe think. \nBut the festival as a whole is super exciting. OK\, no Caro Ramsay this year but we do have Theresa Talbot\, Lesley Kelly\, Margaret Kirk\, Hania Allen\, Olga Wojtas\, Gillian Galbraith\, Denzil Meyrick as well as\, of course\, Michael and your current correspondent. \nAll the events take place in the Pagoda\, which is a superb venue\, and the festival kicks off on Friday November 1. \nNow – back to writing some original comedy. \nI say\, I say\, I say….my dog has no nose… \nI’m laughing already.

SUMMARY:Bute Noir 2019
DESCRIPTION:It’s festival season for me. \nAnd my first port of call is BUTE NOIR. \n \nFor those of you not blessed to live in or be acquainted with God’s country (that’s Scotland\, in case you were wondering)\, Bute is a jewel of an island in the Firth of Clyde. \nAnd Bute Noir is a jewel of a festival. \nI mean\, just look at the names on that poster above. \nTalk about star power? \nOK\, there’s also Caro Ramsay but you can’t have everything. \nThe islanders have really taken this annual event to their hearts. They pack every panel or event\, with many selling out within days of going on sale. \nThis year’s festival takes place over the weekend of August 2-4 at a variety of venues in Rothesay\, including the museum\, the library and Print Point\, the island’s excellent book shop. \nHere’s is the full list of events but most of them have already sold out. There are a few tickets left at the time of typing for a few\, so if you fancy trip doon the watter\, contact Print Point on 01700 503389 to find out what’s available. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:A weekend of murder and mayhem
DESCRIPTION:It’s an attractive little town\, like many in the highlands. Neat streets. Solid stone buildings. Stunning views to the mountains. \nBut for one weekend a year it becomes the focal point of murder and mayhem. A centre of dark acts and despicable deeds. \nAnd that’s just the jokes in Carry on Sleuthing! \nYes\, it’s time for the Wee Crime Festival in lovely Grantown-on-Spey (November 2-4). \n \nThis will mark the fourth year I’ve trekked northwards for this absolutely terrific event and one of these years they’ll find me out. \nOnce again the Crime Writers Associated Players (CWAP) will be debuting a brand new Carry on Sleuthing. There will be drama\, horror and tears. And that’s just when Michael J. Malone can’t find his sporran. \nCaro Ramsay will once again be taking the leading role. Spinster sleuth Letitia Luvibod is becoming very much her alter ego\, I think. \n \nBut that’s just one event in the weekend of fun and fear. \nThere are top names attending this year. \nStuart McBride! \nAlex Gray! \nCraig Robertson! \nAlex Sokoloff! \nNeil Broadfoot! \nSandra Ireland! \nThomas Enger! \nMargaret Kirk! \nHelen Forbes! \nHugh Pugh\, Barney McGrew! \nWell\, okay perhaps not the last two. \nThe events mostly take place in the Pagoda\, a terrific venue in the town\, while the Saturday night dinner takes over the Garth Hotel restaurant and the Sunday session will be found in Grantown Golf Club. \nCome along and make a weekend of it. It is a truly great festival – Marjorie in the Bookmark and her willing band of volunteers really do a great job in pulling all this together. \n

SUMMARY:Bloody Scotland - another fabulous weekend ahead.
DESCRIPTION:Crime festival Bloody Scotland is going from strength to strength. \nSeriously\, how they pull together a programme of events that is varied\, fascinating and entertaining all at the same time amazes me. \nIt doesn’t happen overnight\, of course. The committee and the volunteers put in long hours to make sure all the elements gel. \nAnd this year is no exception. \nThe weekend of September 21-23 will be a busy one in Stirling\, because the festival has grown in its seven years of being. \nYou can read about this year’s festival here (I like the bit about me having a marvellous mind. And no\, I didn’t write that bit): \nhttps://bloodyscotland.com/announcements/the-2018-bloody-scotland-programme-revealed/ \n \nAnd you can view the full programme here: \nhttps://bloodyscotland.com/events/ \nI’m lucky enough to be chairing two panels and appearing as me (in a way) in another. \nOn Saturday September 22\, I’ll be chatting to Cathi Unsworth\, Nick Triplow and Harry Brett about Brit Noir and its legacy. \n \nBlighty has a fine tradition of gritty crime – it’s not all obscure poisons and cucumber sandwiches – and we’ll talk about it and how it flourishes today. \nIt promises to be an entertaining session and you can find details and how to book tickets here: \nhttp://bit.ly/2sDwGog \nOn Sunday September 23 I’ll be with two of our most popular authors – Quintin Jardine and Denzil Meyrick. \n \nThese guys really know their stuff and I’ll really have to be on my toes. \nQuintin has more titles to his name than I have had hot flushes while Denzil’s rise can only be described as meteoric. \nThey’re at the top of their game and neither showing any signs of slackening their grip on the bestseller lists. \nNo matter how much I stand on their fingers. \nFurther details here: \nhttp://bit.ly/2kXCtR3 \nAnd finally\, there’s this. \n \nYes\, Caro Ramsay\, Michael J. Malone and I will finally help Carry on Sleuthing make its Bloody Scotland debut on Sunday September 23. \nI know Irvine Welsh probably thinks he’s closing the festival but the truth is we will stop it in its tracks. At least\, some of the jokes will. \nCome along and see us\, find out who the mystery guests are\, and help solve the murder. \nMore details here: \nhttp://bit.ly/2M8pkBk
