SUMMARY:Carry on Sleuthing rides again
DESCRIPTION:Despite public demand\, the Crime Writers Amalgamated Players (CWAP for short) are on the road again. \nFresh from its triumph on Bute\, the Carry on Sleuthing team will\, to paraphrase The Monkees\, take the last train to Clarkston to bring quality theatre to the city suburbs. Or something. \nYes\, you lucky Clarkstonians will have the chance to revel in the mystery and fun that has had audiences both puzzled and incontinent from Sanquhar to Grantown. \nA talented band of performers will be presenting a superb show filled with wit and style and elegance. \nUnfortunately\, that’s not this show. \nAuthors Caro Ramsay\, Theresa Talbot\, Michael J Malone and Douglas Skelton will trot out the clues that will help amateur sleuth Letitia Luvibod solve the mystery of the Murder at the Knickerage (oo-er\, missus!) \nUnfortunately\, there will also be bad jokes and even worse accents. \nCome see them in Clarkston library on Tuesday October 29. To book\, contact the library. \n

SUMMARY:Dark Nights and Dark Deeds in Grantown-on-Spey
DESCRIPTION:It’s autumn so that means it’s time to return to Grantown for the Halloween weekend. \nThis is always a high spot on my calendar\, not the least because we get to do Carry on Sleuthing. \nOK\, maybe audiences don’t share our enthusiasm but the cast enjoy themselves. Well\, most of them. \nAnd this year\, it’s a BRAND NEW show\, entitled A MURDER IS MISPRONOUNCED! \nRegular cast mates Caro Ramsay\, Michael J. Malone and I will the joined by guests stars SG MacLean\, Lesley Kelly\, Olga Wojtas and James Oswald in the comedy. For want of a better word. \nShona MacLean has walked the boards before\, so she should know better. Lesley Kelly has also appeared in a previous show. Olga and James are fresh meat…sorry\, newcomers. \nThe play kicks off the festival weekend during which all the above will be joined by author Mark Leggatt for panels and chats and\, on Saturday night\, a quiz being concocted by Caro Ramsay. \nIt really is a fun weekend and if you can get to this lovely town nestling at the foot of the Cairngorms\, then we’d love to see you. \nSee the poster illustrations for details. All events will take place in the newly refurbished Grantown YMCA Community Centre on the Main Street. \njtasjtas \n

SUMMARY:Four Blokes and the Sleuthing gang join forces again
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nYes – it’s true!\nThose Four Blokes are still searching for that plot and the trail is taking them back to Dumfries’ fabulous Theatre Royal. \nOnce again\, they will be joined the Carry on Sleuthing team in a double bill of mirther (that’s a mixture of mirth and murder\, in case you hadn’t spotted it). \n  \nThe crime writers on offer in the show are Caro Ramsay\, Lucy Cameron\, Neil Broadfoot\, Gordon Brown\, Mark Leggatt\, Michael J. Malone and Douglas Skelton. \nThe blokes will\, as usual\, create a crime story before the audience’s very eyes – and given it’s taking place on Burns Night\, there may well be a Bardic flavour. Be prepared for exploding haggi\, Slashy Sarks and a man’s a corpse for a’ that. \n \nThe Carry on Sleuthing epic this year will be ‘A Death on the Ocean Wave’\, a cunning tale of murder and skulduggery aboard an ocean liner. Once again ace sleuth Letitia Luvibod will look up from her knitting to fathom the mystery and bring the identity of the dastardly murderer to the surface – but the audience have to spot the clues and put forward their own theories. To do so they have to wade through a sea of bad jokes and red herrings. Perhaps even a couple of turbot. \nYou’ll find details here. You can buy tickets singly at £8 or £12 for both shows: \nhttps://www.evensi.uk/carry-sleuthing-66-68-shakespeare-street-dg1-2jh-dumfries/279949477

SUMMARY:A weekend of murder and mayhem
DESCRIPTION:It’s an attractive little town\, like many in the highlands. Neat streets. Solid stone buildings. Stunning views to the mountains. \nBut for one weekend a year it becomes the focal point of murder and mayhem. A centre of dark acts and despicable deeds. \nAnd that’s just the jokes in Carry on Sleuthing! \nYes\, it’s time for the Wee Crime Festival in lovely Grantown-on-Spey (November 2-4). \n \nThis will mark the fourth year I’ve trekked northwards for this absolutely terrific event and one of these years they’ll find me out. \nOnce again the Crime Writers Associated Players (CWAP) will be debuting a brand new Carry on Sleuthing. There will be drama\, horror and tears. And that’s just when Michael J. Malone can’t find his sporran. \nCaro Ramsay will once again be taking the leading role. Spinster sleuth Letitia Luvibod is becoming very much her alter ego\, I think. \n \nBut that’s just one event in the weekend of fun and fear. \nThere are top names attending this year. \nStuart McBride! \nAlex Gray! \nCraig Robertson! \nAlex Sokoloff! \nNeil Broadfoot! \nSandra Ireland! \nThomas Enger! \nMargaret Kirk! \nHelen Forbes! \nHugh Pugh\, Barney McGrew! \nWell\, okay perhaps not the last two. \nThe events mostly take place in the Pagoda\, a terrific venue in the town\, while the Saturday night dinner takes over the Garth Hotel restaurant and the Sunday session will be found in Grantown Golf Club. \nCome along and make a weekend of it. It is a truly great festival – Marjorie in the Bookmark and her willing band of volunteers really do a great job in pulling all this together. \n

SUMMARY:Carry on Sleuthing returns to Tidelines
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, it’s true! \nCrime Writers Amalgamated Players (CWAP for short) are heading back to the seaside this September. \nDespite public demand – there may even have been a petition and an appeal to President Trump to issue an Executive Order – Carry on Sleuthing will close this year’s Tidelines Festival for the second year. \nAnd they thought they’d closed it down it last year! \nA talented band of performers will be presenting a superb show filled with wit and style and elegance. \nUnfortunately\, that’s not this show. \nCrime writers Caro Ramsay\, Theresa Talbot (yes\, her off the talking wireless)\, Michael J. Malone and Douglas Skelton will be among the cast members for this second bite at the Sleuthing pie. \nLast year’s show was very nearly sold out\, apparently only two tickets remained unsold so they’ll sit there this year until they’re taken. \nSo book now to avoid disappointment (it says here). \nSeriously\, it’s a fun show with lots of laughs and quite a few groans. And bad accents. \nYou’ll find the complete programme for Tidelines 2018 here: \nhttps://view.joomag.com/tidelines-programme-2018/M0227255001528281007 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Carry on Sleuthing makes its West End debut!
DESCRIPTION:Forget the National Theatre and the RSC. \nThe biggest theatrical event of the season is hitting the West End in June. \nWell\, the West End of Glasgow. \nYes – the wandering band of performers that is the Crime Writers Amalgamated Players (CWAP) are heading for the prestigious Hunterian Museum to present ‘A Death on the Ocean Wave’. \n \nThe show is part of the fabulous West End Festival. \nYou may think you’ve seen it before but you really haven’t. This is a newly expanded version of the show that last played Glasgow two years ago\, in Waterstones Argyle Street. \nHowever\, the culprit remains the same\, so please keep schtum. Otherwise there may be some defenestration. (Look it up – you want me to do all the work for you?) \nDetails can be found here: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/carry-on-sleuthing-a-death-on-the-ocean-wave-tickets-45720857315 \nSo please\, come along and help Letitia Luvibod wade through the clues and the jokes to find out who killed loathsome lawyer Hiram Grabbitt.

SUMMARY:Carry on Sleuthing returns to the Harbour Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Carry on Sleuthing: A Death on the Ocean Wave sails back into Irvine’s Harbour Arts Centre in February. \nThe gang will be back together for a special show in aid of the charity Breaking the Silence\, which provides support for victims of rape and childhood sexual abuse. \nAnd if you’ve seen it before\, don’t worry – there’s new material\, although the solution to the mystery remains the same\, so keep it to yourself. \nTell us\, though\, because we’ve forgotten. \nCaro Ramsay\, Theresa Talbot\, Pat Young\, Michael J. Malone and myself will be back in costume for the cast of dozens. \nDetails here: \nhttps://www.ents24.com/irvine-events/harbour-arts-centre/breaking-the-silence-carry-on-sleuthing/5212363 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Murder Most Fun in the Queen of the South
DESCRIPTION:They called it a triumph in Grantown-on-Spey (or some kind of clapped out old banger\, anyway). \nAnd in January\, Carry on Sleuthing 2: Murder at the Knickerage is heading for Dumfries – and the oldest working theatre in Scotland. \nAnd if that wasn’t enough to get the funny bone tingling\, the Theatre Royal will also host Four Crime Writers in Search of a Plot. \nALL IN THE SAME NIGHT! \nLet Joy be unbound (she’s a lovely girl)! \n \nYes\, indeedy – Gordon ‘GJ’ Brown\, Mark Leggatt\, Neil Broadfoot and Douglas Skelton will be dusting off the old Tea Cosy of Inspiration (TCOI) and getting their little grey cells in gear to create a crime story before the audience’s very eyes live on stage (well\, almost live. A couple of them don’t look too healthy). \nHere’s the drill – the audience is invited to suggest a protagonist and a murder weapon and then choose which author will write the next section of the story. While the chosen one is sporting the TCOI and churning out some fantastic prose (it could happen)\, the others will field question about crime writing from the audience. \nIt’s fast\, it’s fun and it could well be folly. \n \nThen the Carry on Sleuthing team – Caro Ramsay\, Lucy Cameron\, Michael J. Malone and Douglas Skelton – will take over the stage to present a mystifying mystery filled with suspense\, danger and\, well\, mystifying mystery. \nEither that or they’ll just do Murder at the Knickerage. \nWith script in hand\, because they’re incapable of remembering lines and you wouldn’t want some of these stuck in your head anyway\, they will invite you to listen to the witnesses\, find the clues and decide who the murderer was. \nHowever\, budding sleuths have to wade their way through a barrage of jokes and sight gags to find the clues! \nDon’t miss this tittersome evening of murder\, mystery and mirth. \nTickets can be booked now\, priced £8 for an individual show\, or £12 for the two. \n  \nFind out how to book here: \nhttps://www.ents24.com/dumfries-events/theatre-royal \n

SUMMARY:Leaping lizards! It's almost Bloody Scotland time!
DESCRIPTION:To be honest\, I can’t believe it’s almost here. \nIt seems like only yesterday that I shared a stage with Catriona MacPherson\, Gillian Galbraith\, Russel D McLean and the always wonderful Theresa Talbot (she paid me to say that). But it wasn’t yesterday\, it was last September. \nThis year I’m involved in three things. Yes\, three! Some mistake\, surely? But no\, I’ve managed to elbow my way in. \nFirst up\, I’m chairing Kate London\, Clare Mackintosh and RJ Mitchell in the ‘From Cops to Robbers’ panel. (Saturday Sept 9\, .5.30pm – 6.30pm). They are all former police officers now turned to writing. Naturally\, there is no suggestion that they have turned to robbery as well\, but I’ll keep a firm grip of my clipboard just the same. \nDetails here: \nFrom Cops to Robbers \nThen\, on Sunday\, I’m flexing my acting muscles to play Inspector Faro in Alanna Knight’s play ‘The Case of the Vanishing Vagrant.’ \nI reject any suggestion that because of the way I dress I should play the vagrant. \nI’m looking forward to this and can only hope I can fill Stuart MacBride’s shoes adequately. He played Faro in last year’s play and was very\, very\, VERY good. \nWhat’s doubly daunting is that fellow cast members Marsali Taylor\, Abir Mukherjee and Gordon Brown have to perform knowing that a proper actor is standing beside us. \nHollywood star Harley Jane Kozak also write crime and she has agreed to take part in the play. \nI know the rest of the cast join me in saying GULP. \nDetails here: \nInspector Faro Investigates \nImmediately after that – we’ll barely have to time to fend off our adoring fans (cough) – Gordon Brown and I will head to another venue for ‘Four Blokes in Search of a Plot’. \nOur Crime Factor comrades Neil Broadfoot and Mark Leggatt will make up the quivering quartet trying to create a crime storybefore the audience’s very eyes\, while also keeping up a stream of witty banter and interesting conversation. Or something. \nDetails here: \nFour Blokes in Search of a Plot \nIt’s going to be fun and the entire festival is one not to be missed. Still some tickets left for a wide variety of events. \nFull list of panels and events here: \nBloody Scotland 2017

SUMMARY:Carry on Sleuthing - the most fun you'll have solving a murder
DESCRIPTION:A man is murdered on a luxury ocean liner. There is a variety of suspects. Shrewd amateur detective Letitia Luvibod is on hand to solve it – and you can help her. \nAnd it’s all happening in Ayr’s Carnegie Library. \nAyrshire-based authors Michael. J. Malone and Douglas Skelton will join library staff to present the radio-style play ‘Carry on Sleuthing’ on Monday night. \nThere will be jokes\, a mystery to solve\, more jokes and wine – which will help with the jokes. \n \nSkelton wrote the play specially for the event following a challenge from the staff to cup with something special for National Crime Reading Month. \nHe said: “The gauntlet was thrown down and for a long time I claimed a bad back prevented me from picking it up. The bad part of my back had a big yellow streak running through it but finally I overcame my fears\, took down the Big Book of Bad Jokes for Boys and began writing. \n“Long before I turned to killing people for a living – on paper at least – I’d written comedy for shows on hospital radio in Glasgow. I’d never actually weaved a solvable mystery through them\, though\, so this presented a whole range of challenges.” \nHe continued: “I think the title of the play shows the rough level of the humour\, although perhaps not as racy as you might expect. It is a family show\, after all!” \nSkelton has roped in friend and fellow author Michael J. Malone to tap into his inner De Niro to take part. \nMichael said: “I’ve been reading up on Stanislavsky to properly get into my character and bring him to life. I intend to bring some gravitas to what are\, frankly\, some pretty ridiculous scenes. \n“Or I may just get some wine down my neck and go for some cheap laughs.” \n  \n‘Carry on Sleuthing’ is part of National Crime Reading Month and can be seen in the Carnegie Library\, Ayr on Monday June 29\, 7pm to 9pm. It’s part of the Book Group Social Evening although anyone is welcome. Tickets cost £2 and booking is essential. Tel: 01292 286385 or drop-in to the library at 12 Main Street\, Ayr KA8 8EB.
