SUMMARY:Murder with a Smile on Glasgow's Byres Road
DESCRIPTION:I am really pleased to have been invited to participate in the very first Byres Road Book Festival. \nI’ll be appearing with Aline Templeton and old pal Matt Bendoris in a panel discussing Murder With A Smile. \nAnother pal\, Mark Leggatt\, will be chairing us. \nIt promises to be loads of fun and it’d be nice to see you all there. \nMark Leggatt\, Aline Templeton\, Douglas Skelton\, Matt Bendoris \nFor many years I worked on the local paper for the West End of Glasgow. \nIt was first the West End News\, then the West End Times\, then the Glasgow Guardian\, when it became a free newspaper. We joked that if it didn’t change its name every few years\, we got bored. \nI’ve got many happy memories of the paper and the area. People I met and who I have since lost touch with. Pubs we used to drink in. Table tennis in a local church hall at lunchtimes. \nIt was a great period of my life and like many such periods I didn’t appreciate them fully at the time! \n

SUMMARY:Back to my old stomping ground with Crime Factor!
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday June 30\, the Crime Factor rounds off National Crime Reading Month by visiting my old stomping ground – East Kilbride. \nWell\, it’s me we’re talking about so it was less a case of stomping\, more treading lightly and not causing a fuss. \nI’m older now\, though\, and all set to raise a ruckus! \nYes\, I spent my teenage years in the town. I went to school there\, I got drunk there for the first time\, fell in love for the first time\, second time\, probably a few more times. I fall very easily. Especially now when I’m not so steady on my pins. \nI developed my love of the movies there\, attending the Cinema sometimes twice a week. That’s what it was called\, stunningly original I know but it was my home from home. \nI built tree houses and dens. I roamed fields and forests that are now housing estates. I did hospital radio in Hairmyres and Philipshill. I stand up – well\, I was on my feet and there were jokes of a sort – in school concerts. \nAnyway\, Neil Broadfoot\, Gordon GJ Brown\, Mark Leggatt and I – overseen with an iron first by Peter Burnett – will be in the Waterstones store in the town centre\, which hasn’t half grown since I lived there. I mean\, I remember having my first shave when I turned a corner in the square one day. As you can see\,I haven’t had one since. Now it’s all enclosed. And it’s some place\, too. \nSo come along and see us. It’s free and it’s fun. \n  \nWaterstones EK \nMyself\, Neil Broadfoot\, Mark Leggatt and Gordon GJ Brown. Picture by Daniel Morrison. And yes\, Neil was holding me up.

SUMMARY:Crime Writers unite!
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nFor those who missed the theatrical experience of a lifetime in Waterstones Argyle Street on Friday April 8\, I’ll be back in the company of Caro Ramsay and Theresa Talbot for a special panel of crime chat later this month. \nThere’ll be no histrionics this time – although you never know with Theresa (she’s BBC\, after all). However\, a stern look from Caro will keep her in check. A stern look from Caro keeps us all in check. She can kill you with her pinkie. \nAnyway\, we’ll be in the Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns for an event organised by Waterstones at Primavera’s on Wednesday April 27. \nIf you didn’t manage to buy a copy of OPEN WOUNDS at the sell-out play/launch (did I mention we sold out? No? We sold out!) then you’ll get one\, or more\, here. And I’ll sign it at no extra charge. \nCaro will be launching her new book RAT RUN\, which promises to be an absolute belter\, while Theresa will have brand new\, hot off the presses copies of her terrific crime book PENANCE. \nCaro and Theresa are great at this sort of thing and you won’t be disappointed by their chat. I’ll try my best to keep up. \nPlease come and joins us. Call the store on 0141 616 3933 to reserve a space. \nMore details here: \nNewton Mearns event

SUMMARY:Assault 'n' Sauce v Assault 'n' Vinegar: East v West
DESCRIPTION:It’s fast becoming a tradition in any book festival worth its salt that there is an East Coast v West Coast event – or a North v South. \n \nNext week is Book Week Scotland and on Thursday November 26 the formidable Caro Ramsay will be debating with the plucky Neil Broadfoot on which setting is tops – is it West (which rhymes with Best) or the East (which rhymes with East). \nThey’re both pictured here – and if you can’t work out which is which\, then you have my pity. \n \nI’ll be moderating the event and if you think you detect any bias you couldn’t be more wrong. I will be fair and even-minded\, even though Glasgow is best. \nYou’ll find details here: \n  \nCaro and Neil

SUMMARY:See the Glasgow Three!
DESCRIPTION:At this year’s Bloody Scotland I’ll be sharing the stage – and a laugh or two no doubt – with the wonderful Caro Ramsay and the fabulous Michael J. Malone. And the invoice is in the post for both of those superlatives. A guy’s gotta eat. \nWe three will be coming together at 3.15pm in the Academy Suite of the sumptuous Stirling Highland Hotel. In Stirling\, which is just as well given the name. \nWe have been described as three stalwarts of the Scottish crime scene – gosh! – and we’ll be in conversation about cops v crooks. \nYou see\, Caro writes about cops in her outstanding Anderson and Costello series while Michael straddles – oh\, lordy! – both sides of the law with his superb Ray McBain series and now his astonishing Kenny O’Neill books. Billing department please raise two more superlative invoices. \nI’m really looking forward to this event because it’s always great fun when the three of us get together and I promise we’ll give value for money. \nAnd the event is sponsored by Contraband\, the hugely successful crime imprint of Saraband Publishing. \nYou’ll find details here: \nBloody Scotland \n
