SUMMARY:I'm gonna leave Old Durham Town - but first I'm gonna visit it!
DESCRIPTION:OK\, it’s not quite Roger Whittaker but the sentiment is accurate. \nI’ll be visiting this historic city for the first time in August. \nAlong with bestselling author Denzil Meyrick\, I’ll be chatting first to the book group based in Waterstones but also signing some copies of THUNDER BAY. \nAnd it’s all happening on Saturday August 10. \nIf you’re in the area\, be good to see you.

SUMMARY:Bute Noir 2019
DESCRIPTION:It’s festival season for me. \nAnd my first port of call is BUTE NOIR. \n \nFor those of you not blessed to live in or be acquainted with God’s country (that’s Scotland\, in case you were wondering)\, Bute is a jewel of an island in the Firth of Clyde. \nAnd Bute Noir is a jewel of a festival. \nI mean\, just look at the names on that poster above. \nTalk about star power? \nOK\, there’s also Caro Ramsay but you can’t have everything. \nThe islanders have really taken this annual event to their hearts. They pack every panel or event\, with many selling out within days of going on sale. \nThis year’s festival takes place over the weekend of August 2-4 at a variety of venues in Rothesay\, including the museum\, the library and Print Point\, the island’s excellent book shop. \nHere’s is the full list of events but most of them have already sold out. There are a few tickets left at the time of typing for a few\, so if you fancy trip doon the watter\, contact Print Point on 01700 503389 to find out what’s available. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Four Blokes in Search of a Plot hit Southside Fringe
DESCRIPTION:The Four Blokes – Gordon Brown\, Neil Broadfoot\, Mark Leggatt and Douglas Skelton – are taking their hunt for that elusive plot to the Glasgow Southside Festival Fringe next month. \nThey’ll be in The Cellar on Thursday May 23. \nGive them a main character and a M**der weapon. Then watch them take it in turns to create a crime story before your eyes. There’ll be thrills\, spills and cliffhangers. \nAnd you can ask them questions about crime\, crime writing\, life\, love\, pain – the whole damn thing. \n Their shows have had the audiences rolling in the aisles in Glasgow\, Edinburgh\, Dumfries\, Stirling\, Bute and Newcastle appearing at festivals throughout the land including Bloody Scotland\, Newcastle Noir\, Bute Noir and the Byres Road Festival. \nMore details – and how to book tickets – here: \nhttps://allevents.in/glasgow/four-blokes-in-search-of-a-plot/200016915111546

SUMMARY:Joining forces with Denzil Meyrick and Neil Broadfoot in Perth
DESCRIPTION:Perth has a new literary festival – and the first event is a crime panel! \nI’m joining old pals Denzil Meyrick and Neil Broadfoot in Perth’s Museum and Art Gallery on Friday April 26 on the opening night of the inaugural Soutar Festival of Words. \nYou can learn more about the festival here. \nThe panel will be great fun\, if we can keep Meyrick under control. Which is unlikely! \nIf you live in Perth or can get there\, come and see us! \nNo times or other details yet\, but will update as soon as I know. \n

SUMMARY:These Bloody Islands at Aye Write
DESCRIPTION:Aye Write\, Glasgow’s very own literary festival\, kicks off again in March. \nAnd I’m lucky enough to be part of it! \nOn Sunday March 17 I’ll be joining authors Anna Mazzola and CL Taylor to discuss These Bloody Islands. \n \nBy a stroke of coincidence – not to mention luck – we have each written new books set on Scottish islands. \n \n \nOur chair will be the ever-charming Theresa Talbot. \nTheresa Talbot \nI’m looking forward to this event immensely and I’m delighted to be back at Aye Write answering questions instead of asking them. Although I will be getting my chairman’s jacket on\, too – details posted elsewhere. \nFor details on the island panel and how to book\, click here

DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to announce that I’m making my Granite Noir debut this year. \nI’ll be in Aberdeen on Saturday February 23 to talk about Finding characters and their milieu with Vaseem Khan and Yrsa Sigurdardottir\, hosted by James Naughtie. SUMMARY:A weekend of murder and mayhem
DESCRIPTION:It’s an attractive little town\, like many in the highlands. Neat streets. Solid stone buildings. Stunning views to the mountains. \nBut for one weekend a year it becomes the focal point of murder and mayhem. A centre of dark acts and despicable deeds. \nAnd that’s just the jokes in Carry on Sleuthing! \nYes\, it’s time for the Wee Crime Festival in lovely Grantown-on-Spey (November 2-4). \n \nThis will mark the fourth year I’ve trekked northwards for this absolutely terrific event and one of these years they’ll find me out. \nOnce again the Crime Writers Associated Players (CWAP) will be debuting a brand new Carry on Sleuthing. There will be drama\, horror and tears. And that’s just when Michael J. Malone can’t find his sporran. \nCaro Ramsay will once again be taking the leading role. Spinster sleuth Letitia Luvibod is becoming very much her alter ego\, I think. \n \nBut that’s just one event in the weekend of fun and fear. \nThere are top names attending this year. \nStuart McBride! \nAlex Gray! \nCraig Robertson! \nAlex Sokoloff! \nNeil Broadfoot! \nSandra Ireland! \nThomas Enger! \nMargaret Kirk! \nHelen Forbes! \nHugh Pugh\, Barney McGrew! \nWell\, okay perhaps not the last two. \nThe events mostly take place in the Pagoda\, a terrific venue in the town\, while the Saturday night dinner takes over the Garth Hotel restaurant and the Sunday session will be found in Grantown Golf Club. \nCome along and make a weekend of it. It is a truly great festival – Marjorie in the Bookmark and her willing band of volunteers really do a great job in pulling all this together. \n

DESCRIPTION:I’ll be heading to Waterstones in Argyle Street for the Glasgow launch of THE JANUS RUN. \nI’ll be chatting about the book\, writing about a city in which I don’t live\, thrillers\, mobsters\, black ops agents and possibly tap dancing cats with fellow crime writer Neil Broadfoot. \nAnd before you\, ask no – I couldn’t get anyone better. \nKidding. \nMaybe. \nAnyway\, it all kicks off at 6.30pm and I hope to see you. \nTickets are free but the store asks that you book\, so here’s the link: \nhttps://www.waterstones.com/events/douglas-skelton-launches-the-janus-run/glasgow-argyle-street

DESCRIPTION:The second date on the Four Blokes in Search of a Plot whistlestop tour sees us in Edinburgh. \nWe’re back in Blackwells bookstore\, where we first appeared a couple of years ago under the old Crime Factor format. \nThis time\, though\, we’re presenting the new\, let’s put the show on right here format where we get the audience to give us a main character and a murder weapon and then proceed to create a crime story between us. \n \nFurther details on the show and how to book tickets here: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/four-blokes-in-search-of-a-plot-tickets-47473837526

SUMMARY:Over the sea to Skye
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret that I think Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. \nApart from the midges. They ain’t so beautiful. \nIt’s also no secret that I take a snap or two (or a dozen) from time to time. \nAnd in August I’m heading with pals to one of THE most photogenic parts of the country. \nIsle of Skye – here we come! \nI’ll be joining superstar authors Caro Ramsay (nominated for this year’s McIlvanney Award\, don’tchaknow?) and Michael Malone on the island for Crime at the Clan. \n \nYes\, we’ll be talking crime – and in a castle. \n  \nThis’ll be my second such event in a stately home after the Glamis spectacular earlier this year. \nI’m really looking forward to the trip\, not just for the destination and the event but also because I’ll be travelling through some pretty fabulous scenery. \nI predict lots of oohs and aahs and stop the car\, I need to take a photie. \nThey won’t be pals by the end of this trip… \nMore information on our panel here: \nhttp://www.seall.co.uk/events/crime-at-the-castle-12-aug/ \nCaro and Michael will also be doing workshops. They really know what they’re about so if you’re a crime writer\, get your place booked. Information here: \nhttp://www.seall.co.uk/events/crime-at-the-castle-workshops-12-aug/ \nI have been to Skye before\, but only have one photo for some reason. At least\, I think this was Skye! The dog is Charlie and he was a well-travelled Bearded Collie. Loved the car\, loved to go place – and people smiled at him wherever he went. He’s been gone a long time now and this pic of him was a scan of a hard copy. Why I can’t find any other shots of Skye I don’t know.

SUMMARY:Readers' Afternoon in Troon Library
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be joining pals Pat Young and Michael J. Malone in Troon Library in April for an afternoon dedicated to those all-important readers. \nWe’ll be talking about books\, each other’s books\, other books we enjoy as well as inspiration\, writing routines and – oh\, I don’t know – dogs\, maybe. \nIt’ll be a great afternoon and there’s even tea laid on! \nHope to see you all there.

SUMMARY:Crime at the Castle
DESCRIPTION:I’m honoured to be part of a truly incredible roster of Scottish crime writers at the very first Crime at the Castle. \nAnd what a setting! \nGlamis Castle is reputed to be one of the most haunted sites in Scotland and has\, according to my trusty Gazetteer of Scottish and Irish Ghosts by Peter Underwood\, a haunted chamber\, the ghost of Earl Beardie who played cards with the devil (and lost)\, a bloodstain that never washes out\, a white lady\, a tall figure in a long coat and various other ghosts\, bogles and even a vampire. \nAnd then there’s the monstrous child\, kept away from all eyes in a hidden room. They say that guests staying at the castle once hung towels from the windows of every room but when they went outside there were still windows with no towels – and yet they had opened every door in the castle. \nAll grist to the mill as far as crime writers are concerned. \nI’ll be there\, soaking up the atmosphere during the event on Saturday February 24. \nOther writers appearing are: \nAlex Gray \nCaro Ramsay \nCaroline Dunford \nChris Brookmyre \nChris Longmuir \nCraig Robertson \nDenise Mina \nFrank Muir \nJackie Mclean \nLin Anderson \nMichael J Malone \nSandra Ireland \nShona MacLean \nVal McDermid \nWendy H. Jones \n  \nIt’s quite a line-up! \nThe day-long event will see a mixture of interviews\, talks and workshops. My workshop is on how to create a series and it’s already fully booked\, which naturally pleases me no end. \nLater\, I’ll be chating to Sandra Ireland about hard-boiled crime. \n \nThere are still a very few places left on this exciting new addition to Scotland’s roster of crime festival so if you fancy seeing some great writers (and me) in a fabulous setting\, book no! \nDetails here: \nhttp://www.glamis-castle.co.uk/event_detail.cfm/event_ID/147/title/title=Crime-at-the-Castle

SUMMARY:Murder Most Fun in the Queen of the South
DESCRIPTION:They called it a triumph in Grantown-on-Spey (or some kind of clapped out old banger\, anyway). \nAnd in January\, Carry on Sleuthing 2: Murder at the Knickerage is heading for Dumfries – and the oldest working theatre in Scotland. \nAnd if that wasn’t enough to get the funny bone tingling\, the Theatre Royal will also host Four Crime Writers in Search of a Plot. \nALL IN THE SAME NIGHT! \nLet Joy be unbound (she’s a lovely girl)! \n \nYes\, indeedy – Gordon ‘GJ’ Brown\, Mark Leggatt\, Neil Broadfoot and Douglas Skelton will be dusting off the old Tea Cosy of Inspiration (TCOI) and getting their little grey cells in gear to create a crime story before the audience’s very eyes live on stage (well\, almost live. A couple of them don’t look too healthy). \nHere’s the drill – the audience is invited to suggest a protagonist and a murder weapon and then choose which author will write the next section of the story. While the chosen one is sporting the TCOI and churning out some fantastic prose (it could happen)\, the others will field question about crime writing from the audience. \nIt’s fast\, it’s fun and it could well be folly. \n \nThen the Carry on Sleuthing team – Caro Ramsay\, Lucy Cameron\, Michael J. Malone and Douglas Skelton – will take over the stage to present a mystifying mystery filled with suspense\, danger and\, well\, mystifying mystery. \nEither that or they’ll just do Murder at the Knickerage. \nWith script in hand\, because they’re incapable of remembering lines and you wouldn’t want some of these stuck in your head anyway\, they will invite you to listen to the witnesses\, find the clues and decide who the murderer was. \nHowever\, budding sleuths have to wade their way through a barrage of jokes and sight gags to find the clues! \nDon’t miss this tittersome evening of murder\, mystery and mirth. \nTickets can be booked now\, priced £8 for an individual show\, or £12 for the two. \n  \nFind out how to book here: \nhttps://www.ents24.com/dumfries-events/theatre-royal \n

SUMMARY:Caro Ramsay launches new book
DESCRIPTION:Bloody hell! \nThat Caro Ramsay’s got a new book heading into the hands of eager fans. \nYes – another one! Does she eat? \nI’m chatting to Caro Ramsay for the launch of her new book on November 30 \nIt’s called THE SUFFERING OF STRANGERS and it’s bound to be another belter. \nAnd she’ll be launching it during Book Week Scotland in the Prima Vera Bistro\, courtesy of Waterstones Newton Mearns. \nApparently\, she’ll be in conversation with yours truly. \nWe’ll talk about the book\, the inspiration\, the symbolism with which her work is replete and the existential angst of writing about crime. \nIf you’ve ever been to an event with Caro\, you’ll know that to be a complete lie. \nThe book is serious but the event will be fun. \nI wouldn’t miss it. \nActually\, I’d better not – Caro knows how to kill without leaving a trace. \nMore info here: \nhttps://www.waterstones.com/events/an-evening-with-caro-ramsay/newton-mearns-37241 \n

SUMMARY:Skelton's skeletons - Campbeltown Library
DESCRIPTION:The midway point of my three day mini tour of Argyll and Bute takes me to Campbeltown\, just down the road from the land of my forefathers (which was Gigha\, by the way). \nThis is another event for the fabulous Book Week Scotland\, organised by the Scottish Book Trust (yay for them!) \n \nThese next two events are called Skelton’s Skeletons. Will I be pulling anything out of the closet? Of course I will – I’m not heading there naked. It’s the end of November\, for goodness sake. I’d freeze my plots off. \nI’ll talking about the life of a writer. Luckily\, that writer happens to be me so I know a thing or two about it. \nI’ll discuss the books\, both fiction and non. I’ll talk about the process. I’ll talk about dealing with reviews. \nIt’s all light-hearted stuff\, so if you’re in Campbeltown\, come see me. \nMore info here: \nhttp://www.scottishbooktrust.com/about/events/skeltons-skeletons-campbeltown-library \n  \nWith thanks to Argyll and Bute Libraries and Scottish Book Trust.

SUMMARY:Four Crime Writers head out west
DESCRIPTION:Here’s the story so far – Four dashing\, debonair\, supremely talented young crime writers agree to change the format of their already successful touring panel. It’s daring! It’s brave! It’s astounding! \nMeanwhile\, Neil Broadfoot\, Gordon Brown\, Mark Leggatt and Douglas Skelton are doing the same with theirs. \nIt’s madness! \nMadness\, I tell you! \nThe brilliant Byres Road Book bonanza is back – and Four Crime Writers will be looking for that elusive plot in Hillhead Library on Saturday September 23. \nThe new format sees us create a crime story from scratch\, while also engaging in erudite conversation. \nOkay\, maybe not so erudite but there will be words coming from our mouths\, as well as from our fingertips. \nWe’re not promising they’ll be in the right order or even spelled correctly\, but they will be words. \nSo do get along and see us. We may come this way but once! \nDetails below and here: \nhttps://www.byresroadbookfestival.com/23rd-september/four-crime-writers-in-search-of-a-plot2282017 \n

SUMMARY:Bloody Scotland: Four Blokes in Search of a Plot
DESCRIPTION:The Crime Factor old boy band are getting back together\, specially for Bloody Scotland. \nNeil Broadfoot\, Gordon Brown\, Mark Leggatt and I will be fielding questions from the audience on crime\, crime writing and how to put the two together. \nThere may even be cat jokes! \nWe’re appearing in a new venue to Scotland’s top crime writing festival\, the Allan Park South Church\, at 5.30pm on Sunday September 10. \nWe like to think we’re the climactic event in the weekend festival. Don’t pay any attention to those who says it’s Lynda La Plante! \nYou can order tickets here: \nBook here

SUMMARY:Leaping lizards! It's almost Bloody Scotland time!
DESCRIPTION:To be honest\, I can’t believe it’s almost here. \nIt seems like only yesterday that I shared a stage with Catriona MacPherson\, Gillian Galbraith\, Russel D McLean and the always wonderful Theresa Talbot (she paid me to say that). But it wasn’t yesterday\, it was last September. \nThis year I’m involved in three things. Yes\, three! Some mistake\, surely? But no\, I’ve managed to elbow my way in. \nFirst up\, I’m chairing Kate London\, Clare Mackintosh and RJ Mitchell in the ‘From Cops to Robbers’ panel. (Saturday Sept 9\, .5.30pm – 6.30pm). They are all former police officers now turned to writing. Naturally\, there is no suggestion that they have turned to robbery as well\, but I’ll keep a firm grip of my clipboard just the same. \nDetails here: \nFrom Cops to Robbers \nThen\, on Sunday\, I’m flexing my acting muscles to play Inspector Faro in Alanna Knight’s play ‘The Case of the Vanishing Vagrant.’ \nI reject any suggestion that because of the way I dress I should play the vagrant. \nI’m looking forward to this and can only hope I can fill Stuart MacBride’s shoes adequately. He played Faro in last year’s play and was very\, very\, VERY good. \nWhat’s doubly daunting is that fellow cast members Marsali Taylor\, Abir Mukherjee and Gordon Brown have to perform knowing that a proper actor is standing beside us. \nHollywood star Harley Jane Kozak also write crime and she has agreed to take part in the play. \nI know the rest of the cast join me in saying GULP. \nDetails here: \nInspector Faro Investigates \nImmediately after that – we’ll barely have to time to fend off our adoring fans (cough) – Gordon Brown and I will head to another venue for ‘Four Blokes in Search of a Plot’. \nOur Crime Factor comrades Neil Broadfoot and Mark Leggatt will make up the quivering quartet trying to create a crime storybefore the audience’s very eyes\, while also keeping up a stream of witty banter and interesting conversation. Or something. \nDetails here: \nFour Blokes in Search of a Plot \nIt’s going to be fun and the entire festival is one not to be missed. Still some tickets left for a wide variety of events. \nFull list of panels and events here: \nBloody Scotland 2017
